Yves Saint Laurent Couture Palette 5 Couleurs #02 Fauves, Swatches, Review & FOTD

Can one ever have enough natural eye shadows (palettes)?

Knowing that the answer for me is certainly a "no", I got curious over the natural side of YSL's new permanent Couture Palette 5 Couleurs line, and ordered #02 Fauves. I usually go for the more dramatic and dense natural palettes from a certain brand, since I like my natural eye to have some definition, so I felt me and Fauves would get along well. Afterwards I forgot my "no nude nudes" rule and ordered #04 Saharienne, which is a whole other story and will be saved for another post.

The first thing to note about #03 Fauves is that it is one of the less shimmery palette of the range with mostly satin to matte finish. I was a little underwhelmed with #07 Parisienne and #03 Afrique in terms of texture versatility but I am happy to report that #02 Fauves is not only a soft shimmer no definition kind of palette. It has different tones, different finishes and less shimmer. It is that almost matte palette each brand has to offer for an everyday or bridal makeup.

That being said, I still find the darkest shade to be too soft and a little more shimmery than I would prefer, but not to the degree of, say, #07 Parisienne. I like the fact that Fauves plays with the undertones rather than tones, providing browns with different degrees of coolness. I can see this palette getting into make-up kits of professionals to be used across different complexions.

The shades of #02 Fauves are as follows:

Upper left (base shade): A light natural brown with matte finish.
Upper right (highlight): A very light warm off-white with satin finish
Bottom right (color): A medium toned warm to natural brown with satin to matte finish
Bottom left (color): A medium to deep cool brown with satin to matte finish
Center: A deep cool brownish grey with satin finish.

Below I used the highlight shade on the inner corner, base shade all over the lid, bottom right shade to define the outer corner and center shade to define the crease. The textures are silky and very easy to blend. All of the shades have great color pay-off.

Below I combined this eye look with MAC Cheeky Bugger blush and Kelly Yum-Yum lipstick worn as a stain, both were reviewed here. #02 Fauves gives the opportunity to combine the eye look with various other elements such as looks with bold lips or defined cheeks.

FOTD: Yves Saint Laurent Couture Palette 5 Couleurs #02 Fauves

Final thoughts: #02 Fauves is a solid palette of Yves Saint Laurent's Couture Palette 5 Couleurs range. On me I like natural palettes with slight plummy undertones (such as Chanel Charming) but YSL Fauves is a lovely addition to my small(!) natural eye palette collection.

Yves Saint Laurent Couture Palette 5 Couleurs #02 Fauves is permanent and now available across YSL counter.

Do you bother with the "undertones" of your natural quads? What kind of brown tones do you like most?

  1. Hi! This is very pretty on you. I have purchased this but have not used it yet. Are the browns plummy or mostly just variations of true browns?

    1. Hi,
those browns are more brown browns, compared to some other plummy browns, but still they are flattering.

  2. Hi Sara! Thanks for the review; the eyeshadow palette is so lovely on you! This will be a skip for me as I think it will be too cool-toned on my skin, however I'm looking forward to reading your review of Saharienne!

    1. Hi Carolyn,
this one is rather warm toned, Saharienne is more of a cool toned quad for paler ladies (and even too cool toned for me).

    2. Ah, thank you for the info, Sara! I may just skip the YSL palettes then, as I've just purchased 2 of the Chanel quads (largely in part to your helpful swatches and review -- thank you!!). My wallet needs a bit of a break at this point :).

  3. This is a beautiful natural palette on you, really compliments your skin and eye colour. If I'm to get a neutral palette, I go for standout textures and quality, or else I just use the neutral colour from other palettes.

    1. I can understand that. We all have enough natural palettes and it keeps repeating itself. I am just tempted each time, for the name of science and blogging, to try a new released one ;-)

  4. Hi Sara, I've enjoyed reading your blog for the past few months. Your makeup always looks so pretty. Thanks to your review I recently purchased Chanel Tisse Vendome, and I'm really happy with it.
Having read your recent reviews, I was wondering whether to buy YsL Palette in Afrique or one of the new Armani Eyes to Kill solos or another Chanel. Would you tell me how do the textures of the new YSL palettes, and Armani solos compare to the new Chanel quads? Which one is your favourite in terms of colour payoff, texture etc? Many thanks. Kate

    1. Hi Kate,
thanks for the compliments, those are things which keep me going :-**
I am happy that you are enjoying Vendome, this one is one of my favs from the new line. The color story of it is so creative I think.
I love Chanel Quads, not all of them though, so the answer to your question probably depends on what kind of a shade would you like to have. I also like the texture of new Armani Shadows, but again, some of them fade on me (I now have collected more than half of the line). Please feel free to ask me specifically which ones you are eyeing.

    2. Hi Sara, thank you for replying so promptly. From Armani solos I've been considering 9, 13 or 14. I also really like Corallo but I think it is perhaps a bit similar to the peachy shade from Tisse Vendome.

From YSL my favourite is Afrique but today I've read your review of Tisse Mademoiselle and I like that, too. It is a hard decision as I can only splurge on one of those for now. Many thanks again. Kate

    3. Hi Kate, Corallo is a little denser but I think you can get a similar effect with Vendome. If I were you, I would get another Chanel Quad, I think their texture is the best on the market at the moment. Armani singles are nice but it would be more expensive to get four shades of these. I especially like #9 for an everyday look.

  5. This looks great on you! I swatched it at Sephora a while ago and it's definitely my next YSL palette.

    1. Hi Nicci,
I think you have Saharienne right? I couldn't come to terms with that one, still trying :-)))

  6. I think this is my favorite so far and again, that middle shadow should be slightly darker but I guess it's no biggie, I have several shades I could use to deepen it! As usual, love the look you created, very classy! :)

    1. I think they aimed to create something which is very easy to use. For us make-up junkies it is like playing a level 1 game when we are trained to go for level 5 or something ;-)) Still very very pretty and I actually find the center shade to be ok. This one might also be my fav YSL Palette at the moment, Afrique is also pretty but very warm.

    2. LOL Sara! Love your game analogy! So true! :)

  7. Definitely a gorgeous palette, but probably not unique enough to warrant a place on my wishlist. Love the look you created, as always- that lipstick is super pretty on you! xo

    1. Hi Jen,
you are right, if unique is what you are searching for, you might like to keep searching :-)
It makes a good everyday palette with nice texture, for the ones who would like something like that.
Thanks for the lipstick, it is very dense so I can only wear it as a stain to work ;-))
