Clinique Beyond Perfecting Foundation and Concealer in Ivory, Review, Swatch & FOTD

What an unproductive weekend I had. It went on mostly doing nothing. When it is like this I feel terrible but there is something nice about doing nothing too, doesn't it? At least cleaning is done, although *clears throat* not by me.

I have been testing the new foundation of Clinique for a few weeks now and I would like to share my thoughts about it. It is an interesting concept, which brings concealer and foundation together so that you don't need both. Here my review about Clinique Beyond Perfecting Foundation and Concealer.

Packaging and Application

Think about your concealer and multiply its size to five times at least, imagine that in a glass bottle and with a huge applicator, you come close to Clinique Beyond Perfecting Foundation and Concealer. I know some might have problems with the packaging since it is not a pump but I believe it is hard to do a pump for this consistency. I personally don't have problem with it since the bottle neck is quiet small. You do pump in some air but not really anything else would get in. I take the applicator out and put the amount I need on the back of my hand. I don't put the applicator directly to my face. It has a rather thick consistency so if you apply lots of product, it may end up looking like a mask on the face. I like to dampen my beauty blender and pick some product to sheer it out for the face. I then get some more product and apply it with a brush in a heavier fashion as a concealer.

The Shade

The lightest shade in the range which can be purchased in a store is Ivory. There are two lighter shades which are web exclusive in Germany and can be ordered from the company's website. I found Ivory to have rose undertones and it is around NW20. It is a tad too dark and too pink for me but when I apply it, it brings light to my face and conceals the dark circles under eyes, so I am find the shade to be a match for my skin. My criticism though is the fact that my light to medium skin is in no way "very fair" as it is indicated at the website and I think it would be nice to have one lighter shade at the store. A lot of the girls I know complained about the shade selection.

The Result:

After I see below how the end result looks, I am convinced that all my foundations are too yellow for me *chuckles*. Coverage? I would define it as "full" which you would expect from a concealer. It can be sheered out to somehow medium to full coverage and the finish is natural matte. It doesn't look too powdered, but it has more of a velvet finish rather than glowy. It lasts long and doesn't dry out my normal to dry skin once applied over a moisturizer and with a damp beauty blender. I am just not used to wearing "full" coverage foundations. So I prefer this one to cover the imperfections around the face and combine it with a lighter base which lets the skin show through more. I have to admit though that on the photos it looks much better than a lighter base. I didn't touch up the below photos as well as FOTD down below although with other foundations, most of the time I need some photo editing. Below you can see me wearing it as foundation and concealer.

Before/After: Clinique Beyond Perfecting Foundation and Concealer in Ivory

Here is FOTD that you have seen a few posts ago. With a very "natural makeup" it looks a little heavy for daily use. But some prefer more coverage and I go for as less coverage as possible. For photo purposes, it is really great. It also doesn't have any SPF so wouldn't reflect the light.

FOTD: Clinique Beyond Perfecting Foundation and Concealer in Ivory

Here is the ingredients list. It is free of parabens, contains alcohol (Butylene Glycol) which might be a concern if you have very dry skin or if you are sensitive to alcohol. It is listed as suitable for dry combination to oily combination skin and didn't dry mine out.

Final thoughts: Clinique Beyond Perfecting Foundation and Concealer is a nice option for those who are searching for full coverage. I especially like it for photography and for a full on night make-up. I like the fact that it can be sheered out with a damp beauty blender and doesn't look like a mask. It also applies nicely under the eyes and doesn't crease on me. It didn't dry out my dry to normal skin. I do prefer though lighter bases for the day. I wished one lighter shade would be available at the stores to try out.

Availability/Price: Clinique Beyond Perfecting is now available, costs around 32 € for 30ml/ 1Fl. OZ product.

Do you prefer lighter coverage or are you all about the full on base. To which occasions would you wear a full coverage foundation?

  1. Thanks for the review Sara, and I love how you described the packaging. I prefer my base to have light to medium coverage because I find that they are more forgiving shade wise. I must avoid Ivory at all cost though, because it looks way too pink for me, and colours like this make me look like a beetroot. We'll be getting this product in a few months, and I'm hoping we're getting different shades!

  2. Hi Sara, what a strange way to package foundation.... I'm not sure i like that applicator. But it's been a very long time since I've tried anything from Clinique... it brings me back to my high school days! LOL!! I know i know.... sounding like a snob now... geee.... :P

  3. I was curious to see this one in action, so thanks for reviewing! I also prefer my bases to be a little lighter, but this seems indeed a great one for a night out or photos. As for the shade though.. that would be waaaay too pink for me! I'm a fair skinned girl, but I'm more neutral/yellow toned (I think :D). I do love the result - it looks beautiful on you!

  4. Hi Silke,
I am natural undertoned too, also if I have to be something, than rather warm but somehow this looks like a perfect match. I also don't know why. Maybe I have a wrong impression of my undertones after all ;-) I think this one can also be used like a concealer over a lighter base. I hope in your country you have also the other two lighter shades available on the counter so that you can give it a try.

  5. LOL i know, I was very surprised when I saw the packaging. I liked the way it is in a glass though. Most of the foundations come nowadays in plastic and this one feels luxurious in that way.
I don't have many Clinique products but Chubby Sticks are on my list. I am planning for a make-up only with chubbies, let's see ;-))

  6. You cracked me up with beetroot!!!
I have to admit those also look off on me but this one didn't so maybe it is not that pink after all but all my other foundations are rather yellow?
LOL everything is relative after all and I imagine your market getting different shades. Keep us updated :-*

  7. Hi Sunny,
this is even more full than Diorskin Star, which I would define more of a medium coverage compared to this one, even sheered out. I know what you mean, I also tend to like my skin showing through for an easy day look. This one is better for photography and an evening out once used all around but as a concealer can be used more often.

  8. They usually have all the lighter options in the UK which is a good thing. It's strange why it matches you so well! I've got a couple of foundations with a slight pink undertone to it and it's clear it's not the perfect match. Not like a drastic difference ofcourse, but I have to do quite some blending to get it right!

  9. I think it looks great on you! The shade name though "ivory", it couldn't be further from ivory if it tried! What about all of the pale people like me who are more like a nc13?!?

  10. I prefer fuller coverage foundations (or using a heavier concealer with sheerer foundations), so I am very tempted by this! Looks lovely on you :)

  11. Thanks so much for the review! I saw the ads and was curious about it. The swatch looks kind of warm but it doesn't look too warm or pink on your skin, and it makes you look flawless. I'm in the USA and Sephora's website shows 3 colors that are lighter than Ivory. Hey, have you tried the new NARS All Day Luminous Weightless Foundation? I bought it, and I'm really liking it --it is also full coverage , comes in a glass bottle with pump, and there are 20 shades with different undertones. I apply with a damp beauty blender.
