Chanel Spring 2016, My Picks, Review, Swatch & FOTD

I hope you are having a wonderful, awesome weekend. I am celebrating the end of lectures (insert double triple yays here) although there are still exams and stuff to go through. Still, it is great to be able to see the light at the end of the tunnel.

On blog side of things, soon I will be blogging more regularly, I can't wait for it. I am also very excited to have invested in two monster soft boxes for photography. Editing photos were taking lots of time because I didn't have enough light in the room. Also one confession, I didn't know how I could get the best out of my DLSR after that many years. Now that I am experimenting more with the manual settings, I started getting an idea of how to get a better photo and edit less. With that I am hoping to get more done in less time. I just mounted the soft boxes, so excited to shoot the second part of Urban Decay Gwen Collection and Dior, Givenchy & Clarins Spring Collections on the weekend. Hopefully everything goes smoother than before.

Then I say "that many years". In two months it will three years of blogging and in a week the blog is about to hit the 4 million counter. I am so grateful for that. Thank you all very much from the bottom of my heart. I think I will write a proper blog post about these but , you know, just for the time being. Today I have Chanel Spring Collection for you. I have picked all the Illusion d'Ombre (#118 Moonlight Pink, #122 Ocean Light, #126 Griffith Green) out of habit, one of the lipsticks (Rouge Coco Shine #118 Energy) and that beyond gorgeous blush (Sunkiss Ribbon Blush Harmony). My thoughts are right after the jump, hope you enjoy.

Chanel Spring 2016, Sunkiss Ribbon Blush Harmony, Illusion d'Ombre #118, #122, #126, Rouge Coco Shine #118 Energy

I was a little disappointed by the fact that I paid significantly more for the single pieces to get them in the States since the collection was launched even before new year there. Then it took over three weeks for these to arrive here. Then the collection was already launched in Germany but my package was not there yet, sigh. I was about to buy them (at least the blush) once more to avoid that the products were sold out. Then I got super busy and couldn't find time to visit the counter. Good thing because the package appeared a few days ago. All the items here are ordered sight unseen. I would like to check out the palette because it has one of my favorite color combinations, purple with green, but the palette is not released in Germany yet because of some logistics problems. The thought behind my picks were like this: I collect Illusion d'Ombre and nail polishes, so no brainer, the blush can't be skipped really and I need a lipstick to complete the look. Here is one more look to my picks, before I start with the review & swatches.

Chanel Spring 2016, Sunkiss Ribbon Blush Harmony, Illusion d'Ombre #118, #122, #126, Rouge Coco Shine #118 Energy

Let's start with new Illusion d'Ombres. I love this formula and own every single of them including ones which were released overseas. I don't have problem with them drying out because they are water based and can always be applied with a damp brush. The three shade which are being newly released are:

#118 Moonlight Pink: A very light peachy pink with satin finish. This shade is a great everyday color to pop on your lids. If you have deeper eyelids though, it might not show up. I think this shade is great if you have very light or deeper complexion. Everyone in between would have problem in seeing it. If you have like nude make-up though, it is still something to enjoy.

#122 Ocean Light: A medium pastel blue with almost matte finish. This one doesn't go as smooth as the other two, doesn't blend as good and stays patchy ones applied. The color pay-off is also not very good. Chanel has better blue IdOs, I wouldn't recommend this one unless you are into pastel blues and always wanted a shade like this.

#126 Griffith Green: One word, gorgeous! Look at the light green shimmer in the deeper forest green base. This one almost acts like a duo chrome on the swatches. On the eyelids, it didn't look half excited as it did on the swatches. Griffith Green is still such a unique shade and it is a stunner. If you like to see its duo-chrome effect more, you might need a deeper base underneath since it has a transparency to it. I will try to apply it over a blackish base and take a photo for you later.

Swatches: Chanel Illusion d'Ombre #118 Moonlight Pink, #122 Ocean Light, #126 Griffith Green

The eye look below was not a success but still I thought it gives you an idea how these blend (or now blend after half an hour of trying this and that. I started with the green on the outer corner, I wanted to combine it with the peach, I was doing ok, until the blue came in between them, ugh, no go. Probably I will save the blue for an occasion I can't think of at the moment but maybe I come up with something. Moonlight Pink looks cooler on the eyes and it really gives a nice brightened look. Green needs a bit more experimenting, blue, no comment.

And the absolute star of the collection, Chanel Sunkiss Ribbon Blush Harmony. Not the design is taking my breath away but the quality. Chanel really knows how to put a collector's item together. I love the fact that it is nicely pigmented and the design doesn't go away after a few usages. I used it quite a few times last week but it still looks pristine. I also love that you can adjust the shade to you needs. Get a little from lower corner, it is warmer, a little from upper right corner, it is cooler. Everyone make-up lover needs this one, seriously.

Close-up: Chanel Sunkiss Ribbon Blush Harmony for Spring 2016

There are three Rouge Coco Shines in the collection, I went for the most wearable option for me between an Orange (Shipshape), a cool light pink (Mighty) and this natural raspberry pink, which I picked up called Energy. I need every bit of energy I can get lately. You can see nice lip swatches of Mighty and Energy on fair skin tone with cool undertones from Melanie, all the shade on medium olive skin tone from Sabrina. Now that I tried everything together, I thin Shipshape would be more unique to my collection and would match with the blush much better so I might go back to pick that one. Energy is a great everyday shade so it already managed to get inside my bag. These are all so called "hydrating" Rouge Coco Shines. You might already know, there are also Rouge Coco Shines with more pigment but I personally prefer the hydrating ones for a casual without mirror application.

Chanel Rouge Coco Shine #118 Energy

Here is a swatch of Sunkiss Ribbon Blush Harmony with all shades mixed together. I don't think you can really pick up individual shades all that well but you can adjust the final shade by swiping your brush in one direction. I can see that this one may look orange at some fair skin tones with cool undertones, on me it is almost like a bronze pink due to the bronze part in the middle and orange on the corner. Texture of this one is to die for, it has a very subtle shimmer which makes it look beyond natural. It is also very pigmented so swiping my Suqqu Cheek Brush once is enough to get me clown cheeks. Fair ladies might need to use a fan brush or a very soft brush with that one. I love it.

Swatches: Chanel Blush Sunkiss Ribbon, Rouge Coco Shine #118 Energy

I am hoping to review the nail polish Chanel Le Vernis #683 Sunrise Trip in a separate post as I always do but I have to admit that my motivation is low. I needed to apply the polish two times to get the right application. It is a very tricky formula which is gloppy. So you either get it too thick, which doesn't dry even after half an hour. If you apply it too thin, than it looks too transparent to start with. Oh and did I mention tat the first time around I got bubbles like crazy on every single nail? This never happened to me with a Chanel nail polish before. I don't feel comfortable recommending Chanel Le Vernis #683 Sunrise Trip to anyone who is not a Chanel nail polish collector although the shad is to die for. Anyway, brighter side of things, it lasts so long but without a base coat it stains a little.

FOTD: Chanel Spring 2016 Sunkiss Ribbon Blush, Illusion d'Ombre #118, #122, Rouge Coco Shine #118  Energy

Here is the full look, loving the blush and the lipstick. I could really live without the others but since I am collecting Illusion d'Ombre and nail polishes, probably I would have picked them up nonetheless. I have to tame my collector behavior. Have you seen the new nail polishes of Chanel without the names in the front. They don't call my name. I hope the formula is nice. I really think Chanel's formula didn't need a revision, but I guess beauty industry is so competitive these days so they need to constantly "reformulate" to be able to sell. I also saw Dior's single eye shadows are going for a reformulation. I remember them being reformulated just 3 years ago. What do you think about constant reformulations?

FOTD: Chanel Spring 2016 Sunkiss Ribbon Blush, Illusion d'Ombre #118, #122, Rouge Coco Shine #118  Energy

Final thoughts: Chanel gets cheerful & colorful  for Spring. Although I like some color on me, I still found the more natural items of this collection to be more exciting. My picks are Rouge Coco Shine in Energy and Sunkiss Ribbon Blush Harmony, the latter can be a bit challenging to pull off for very fair complexions, as the name suggests "Sunkiss" it has some bronze, orangy tones in there but the formula and design makes it worthwhile to check it out.

Have you picked up anything from Chanel Spring?

  1. What an adventure you had in getting this collection! But, you know, Germany is not alone in not receiving the quad, Tissé Beverly Hills, along with the rest of the items. It did not arrive with the collection in the US, either, and is only now beginning to creep into some stores despite the LA Sunrise collection having been out for several weeks now. The quads are usually key pieces in Chanel's collections and so it was a source of frustration for customers and SAs that it wasn't available. One SA told me if she had a dollar for every time a customer asked about it, she could retire early! :-) The rest of the collection is beautiful--although those of us who live in La La Land are still wondering how on earth Chanel came up with this color scheme to evoke one of our sunrises; especially since the promos shows a sunny day with a brilliant blue sky. Maybe the collection should have been called LA Lunchtime! LOL. Getting back to the quad, at this point in time, I've lost interest in it and have moved on to other things. That's the deal about cosmetics--there's always something new and enticing landing on the counters.

  2. Hello beautiful Sara!
I was literally stalking to your blog to see this post! Hahahaa ! You can call me one of the most loyal readers haha!
I'm so glad that you will be able to post more frequently since i have told you so many times how much i admire your effort !
    Back to Chanel L.A.Sunrise collection!
My very first thoughts when i first saw images of the collection were:" what a vibrant summer collection!" And then ooops i read Spring! For me i think that this should be their summer collection and not the spring one! It's also so small compared to last Spring's one! On one hand is better for my wallet since there is a loooooot Tom Ford Spring goodies for me out there , but on the other hand the collection left many things to be desired in my opinion.i'm still waiting for the collection to launch in Stockholm! I hope we can see the quad which i think would be really nice with using moonlight or griffith green as bases! Only Dior hit the stores yesterday and i really liked the color contour eyeshadow and liner duos! But i'll wait for your thoughts on these too :)
P.S. If there is something that screams Spring for me in Chanel is the Asia and US exclusive highlighter with the perles embossing!
Omg! This is Chanel for me! The good thing is that i'm travelling to London on February and i read somewhere that it will be exclusively available at Terminal 5 in Heathrow airport so i hope i can lay my hands on this beautiful piece of art!!

  3. We received the entire collection in Switzerland a week ago, which is surprisingly early, but you never really know when they will start selling. I had a chance to swatch everything on my face!)) I think I made better decisions than buying online or in a shopping rush at some dark duty free. The most beautiful item in this collection for me is the lipstick Eblouissante, I found the color beautiful on me. Coco Shines could not stay more than a minute on my lips, they they begun to slip away. I also bought the polish rather out of habit, the Moonlight pink cream shadow was too warm and brown on me, so I skipped it. The other two I did not even swatch since I have similar dry eyeshadows and wear them maybe once a year. I also bought two eyeliners - green and plum because they never disappoint me and colors are nice too (the blue one looked too crazy on me). I had a good discount coupon, otherwise I would probably skip the polish.

  4. Sara you look beautiful in this photo! the lip color really really suits you! i am tempted to get one for myself even though my skin tone is much lighter than yours (my skin tone is practically that of copy paper).
i'm SO disappointed to hear your remarks about the nail polish! :-( the color is GORGEOUS. too bad the formula sucks. well you have saved me some money at least :-)

  5. Just got mine today. Blush is beyond beautiful but I gave the Illusions a miss and picked up two of the stylos (I think you would love Purple Choc!!) and, of course, the polish. The quad was a bit hit and miss - or at least the tester was with the blue very patchy pigment and dry, the lilac soft and lovely but I gave it a miss. I am very, very cross about the new nail varnish bottles - they look like fakes to me and nothing like the iconic bottle I love. It may even stop me collecting any new ones! Susan, London

  6. I'm really disappointed with the new look of the Chanel nail polish bottles. I don't know why they are reformulating, but I guess that's why so many shades are not to be found here in the States. I just blogged a comparison between Clinique's Black Honey polish and Chanel Vamp/Rouge Noir and was amazed to discover that the Chanel shades are off the website. What is a Chanel nail polish collection without Vamp? Wanh!

  7. So glad to hear you will be blogging regularly again, miss you ! I swatched the shadows in store, and agree with your assessment of them. Griffith Green is stunning, swatched nicely on my hands, hope the complexity translates to my lids, thinking of getting that one. I have to skip the blush because it has fragrance in ingredients.

  8. I picked up the blush and I am in love! It is stunning to look at and so pretty to wear. I find it to be ultra pigmented on my light skin so I only need the lightest dusting. I also got Energy and I'm really liking, but overall I love the Coco Shines so I figured I was going to get good use from it even before I bought it.

  9. For some reason, I'm not feeling Chanel Spring. I'm kicking myself for not getting anything from their Holiday collection though... However, I'm waiting for Tom Ford Spring because I want to get a few of his stuff. I hope they'll be available in Singapore when I go visit!

  10. How are you liking the green eyeliner, Jane? That one is tempting me.

  11. So glad you will have more time to blog thanks to your new set-up. I too have been waiting on your take on Chanel Spring because I spend a lot of time in the country far from the beauty counters. I appreciate your warnings to fair ladies but for some reason, clown blush is never an issue for me. I feel like my face eats blush. I always need brightening and don't even understand the purpose of a highlighter on my complexion. That silvery Chanel one is the only one I own. LOL. All of that makes the blush very appealing. I was going to try to resist it because I recently got Chanel Vibration, but Bloomies sent me a gift card on a return, so the store credit becomes the excuse. The only other item that tempts me is the green yeux stylo for the lower lash line. My hesitation is that I am not sure it has good staying power. The nail polish is an easy miss. Wasn't there a similar purple one last summer?

    ReplyDelete
  12. Do you have Chanel Perle de lune liner from 2015? I find the green one to be similar - soft and shimmery, a bit metallic, but quite sheer so it needs to be layered for a noticeable color. Also the color itself is quite light, so it gives a shimmery sheer color accent rather than a standard eyeliner effect. I find this type of Chanel eyeliners best for lining the lower eyelid, where I don't want a color to be too intense, or to apply it over an eyeshadow on the upper lid for a bit of sparkle effect and wash of color. As it is sheer, it doesn't need to smudged. I like the cool green color, it is fresh and very spring appropriate, but not sure about a darker skin tone. The plum (a black-navy with some purple shimmer) liner is a bit more pigmented, but still may need some layering for intensity.

  13. Yay, good to have you back in business full time :-)

That blush REALLY is the star product of this collection! I was so happy when I saw the positive review on Temptalia! And I'm really glad you give it two thumbs up as well, woot!

  14. Love, love, love the blush ( I' m crazy about blushes... Ma collection est ridiculement grande, c'est vraiment déraisonnable mais je ne résiste pas aux frais à joués... Pas plus si aux rouges à lèvres !) and even I'm not fan of blue and cold green I think you look beautiful with this makeup ! You just need some white linen shirt, sunnies in you hair, cabriolet and to drive to Marine County !

  16. Hi, thanks! I didn't like the end result all that much because I couldn't blend it as much as my heart desires but on the eyes it was looking better than on the photos :-)

Copy paper lol, I think you might love the Peachy One, that might show up on you although, depending on your undertones, it might look too warm. These are all not that intense so check it out. Formula of the nail polish is terrible, really not recommending that one.

  17. Hi Jane, I don't think we got Eblouissante here, I haven't seen anything else than the Rouge Coco Shines but I will check once more after you told me this. I used to get every shade of Stylos and loved them too but when I swatched these, they felt so dry. I remember reading Sabrina didn't like the purple one either and my swatch was also looking so dry, so I skipped. I usually don't skip a purple stylo, maybe I should go back for that lol.

  18. Hi Melissa,
not really full time but I am getting back slowly :-) I still have to work today. Blush is very pretty but the rest is a much mediocre.

  19. Hi Alison, I am loving the set-up to save time but today some stuff happened on the blog end. The pictures wouldn't show up on the main page and it took me an hour to get it done. I sometimes hate blogger. I should definitely move the blog to another platform but not too much time for that, I might try it in Summer.

See with the blushes it is so different. I get like a clown even with very subtle ones although I am not all that fair. On the other hand my complexion eats the highlighter, even if I put disco balls around my cheeks, they never show up. Go figure! Yes there was Lavender last summer but this one is much more blue and deeper, they are different enough, only if, the formula would be good *sigh*. You should see the new bottles, they look terrible.

  20. LOL, skipper's remorse? What would you get from the holiday? The only thing which I found nice was the Illusion d'Ombre, Khol and one of the nail polishes which you can still get. We still have some of the stuff here, let me know if I can help.

    ReplyDelete
  21. Thanks so much, yes that is what I need, sunnies, linen shirt. I hope the weather gets better soon so that I can translate into these. Right now I am wearing thick pullover and lots of layers, not fun. I would love to see a photo of you blush collection lol. I love the blush too, a winner!

  22. Hi Eileen,
it must be very hard for SAs to answer to the angry customers. I would love to try the quad but if it comes out in 3-4 weeks, I don't think I will get it. The life span of my interest is also not too long. Given the fact that I buy most of the make-up to showcase here, I don't think I would pay all that much for something which doesn't have the value to be shown.

You cracked me up with lunch time hahaha! I was not impressed with the color picks in this collection. They especially look kind of uncoordinated. Chanel has done better collections in the past, even some with lots of colors but still much better. The blue IdO leaves me cold, wondering how it went through the quality process.

    ReplyDelete
  23. They are not the best eyeliners for sure)) they are quite sheer and thin in shape, this is why i keep buying them. I am sure you have many liners for real purple or plum (this one is black with purple shimmer) with proper pigmentation, I remember you don't like sheer eyeliners and prefer UD's ones(which totally makes sense))). And green liner can be easily replaced by these cream eyeshadow.

  24. LOL I laughed so hard about Spring Summer confusion. This ones goes a bit away from pastel and really goes in the summer territory. The powder from the Asian Collection is so gorgeous. I told a friend to try to pick it up for me from Asia but if you will be in London in February, we can maybe message before? I would love you take one for me, it is really so gorgeous. 8th of February is not too far away, please let me know if you can, oh we can e-mail. I wanted to write you anyway :-) I think you are not missing any other pieces from this collection, enjoy your picks Xox (Always love hearing from you :-** )

    ReplyDelete
  25. You exactly got the best items from the collection, congrats :-)
I am not as fair as you but still get clown cheeks with the lightest blush for a reason I don't know. With this one I use the softest cheek brushes and blend well after with a kabuki, then it looks fresh and not overly done. As I wrote, Energy got into my purse and I know I will love it this season.

  26. Hi Katherine, I miss you too :-**
I will start blogging as much as I can soon but now I have to get the exams ready. The blush has perfume, that is right, so if you are sensitive to that, it would only be for the make-up museum. So many of the high end products have perfume in them, it is frustrating. I would be more happy without but I am lucky not to be sensitive to it. I am curious to hear what you think of the green IdO. I think with a black base, it will show its beauty better but alone it is nice too, more wearable.

  27. Oh I know what you mean. A friend asked me to get Vamp for her and I needed to chase it to find one, then I was wondering, isn't it permanent? Now it makes sense. They stopped reproducing some months ago to lower the stocks of the older formula and get us to buy the newer one. I have seen die hard Chanel fans getting very disappointed with the new (naked) bottle design. I really don't think their nail polishes needed reformulating. I don't know why on earth they needed to do something like this.

    ReplyDelete
  28. Hi Susan,
I tried Purple Choc but thought it was very dry on the swatch but if you say it is workable, I am going to go back for it. I don't know why western brands can never get the blue pigment right. The japanese eye shadows have no problem with blues really. Suqqu, RMK, blues are as soft and pigmented as the other shades.
I hate the new bottles, booh, what a bad surprise from Chanel. I am also thinking, maybe it is time to stop getting each and every shade and stick to the ones I like.

    ReplyDelete
  29. Thank you for your review and photos. Everything looks beautiful on you. I think I will skip the whole collection. The blush is beautiful but it is just the wrong shade for me. And I really like the IdO's but I'm not sure I'd be able to carry these shades off (the blue and the green).:)

    ReplyDelete
  30. Yes, that's right. It's a shame they have to reformulate.

    ReplyDelete
  31. Thanks, Jane. I do have Perle de Lune and really love it-- also for the lower lash line. I was thinking of the green for the same use. And I am fair neutral so the light shade would be fine.

    ReplyDelete
  32. I'm hoping you'll review at least some of the new formula Chanel shades.

I picked up Sunrise Trip nail polish, and that's as far as I'm going for this spring. (Dior's really a bigger focus for me, anyway.)
