I hope you had a great weekend and a lovely Valentine's Day. We didn't do much yesterday since with all the stress going on during the last weeks, we were too late to reserve a table. We will probably celebrate by going out in the days to come. After the incidents, I had a very bad back ache due to stress so I couldn't blog as I wanted on the weekend but now that I am back, let me start with something exciting!
Tom Ford is releasing five new quads this Spring, and of course discontinuing some too. You know I am an avid collector of Tom's palettes. You can see my Blog Post Series wrap-up, a comprehensive guide to Tom Ford Quads here. I believe (but I have to check out once more) they are discontinuing Cognac Sable, Ice Queen, Sahara Haze and Lavender Lust. Instead they are launching Disco Dust, Lilac Dream, Last Dance, Starry Night and Honeymoon, the latter being wet & dry formula just like Nude Dip (reviewed here). I would like to share my thoughts on Disco Dust today but before I start, I would like to say one of collector's pet peeves, the numbers, drove me crazy by this launch. I have all the quads numbered from #1 to #14 and wet & dry formulas from #1 to #3. Now Disco Dust is #20 and there is only 4 quads with this formula which are coming out. This might make me very uneasy for the months to come. Dear Tom, please release whatever quad you are holding away from us, for the sanity of the collectors!

Some have said this is the substitute for Cognac Sable, I really can't agree to that but we will see that later. Cognac Sable never looked right on me (reviewed here) so I am not all that sad about it being discontinued although I know many would disagree with me. My heart broke when they discontinued Burnished Amber. Now I am happy to report that Tom Ford Eye Color Quad #20 Disco Dust is closer to Burnished Amber than it is to Cognac Sable.
Although Tom's quads are pricey, they have 10 g of product. The packaging is a very well made, sleek, very functional and luxurious at the same time. It has a magnetic closure and golden details. To me, it is one of the best packaging between all the palettes I own (other than the lousy velvet pouch, which gives a sense of nubuck gloves which were worn a bit too long).

If Cognac Sable would be "the autumn" quad, Disco Dust is the Spring version. You can see the golden and peachy tones dominating. There is one glitter shade in the palette. I wished there would be none but I think it is just me. The deepest shade gives a nice contrast to the otherwise soft tones. The shades are as follows:
Top left: Glitter shade with not much of base shade and silvery white glitter. I prefer applying these type of shades at the end of the make up, with my fingers sparingly on the inner third of the lid to bring a little but of something to the look. This was hard to pick up and it was way to cool for the rest of the shades. It did looked like diamond dust though, still, very pretty. Fall out? Oh yes, be careful with glitter.
Top right: This was the shade which disappointed me most. The color pay off of this peachy bronzy nude is not au par with Tom Ford quality. This shade also has some strange sparse glitter in there which makes no sense since glitter is available separately and you can apply as much as you want. This was also the shade which didn't apply smoothly and didn't show up on my eye lids.
Bottom left: A favorite of mine and if I say a favorite shade of Tom Ford quads of all times, then I wouldn't be lying. This exactly has the pigmented, smooth, long lasting Tom Ford eye shadow quality to it. The satin finish of this peachy pink shade is to die for. I think blue eyes need this shade so does everybody else. Simply beautiful.
Bottom right: A very deep plummy brown which provides the right amount of drama to the eye look or can be used as a liner. This also has a beautiful formula. Although it is much deeper than the other shades, it blends beautifully but doesn't over blend. Another favorite of mine.

Can you guess what I think? I would like to separate the shade on the bottom row and make a duo out of those. The other two are unfortunately doing nothing for me. This makes Disco Dust a mixed bag for me, something I haven't felt for Tom Ford Quads before. I am keeping my hopes high for the other four quads. I have Last Dance too, so I will who's you that one in a day or two.

Here are some swatch comparisons. Cognac Sable is not there because it is much more copper than peach and looks nothing like Disco Dust. I don't think they are substitutes in any way but if you would like to see, I can add some swatches. I went through all of the quads and found the shades of the following two to be closest.
Burnished Amber's two shades which are closest are both warmer and more golden. Orchid Haze's deepest shade resembles the deepest shade in Disco Dust but the one in Orchid Haze is more matte and has more purple in it

Here is a classical eye look with Tom Ford Eye Color Quad #20 Disco Dust. I tried to use the nude shade but it didn't want to show up so I applied the peachy pink all over the lid and defined the look with the deepest shade. I then added a touch of glitter with my fingers. I lined my eyes with Chanel Rouge Noire Le Crayon Kohl (reviewed here) which I am addicted to at the moment.

Here is the look in context. I am wearing Tom Ford Ravish Cheek Color on the eyes and Christian Louboutin Belly Bloom Satin Lipstick on the lips (review coming up next). Loving this combo. I am happy to own a nude which is not too plum based and still looks fine on me. What do you think?

Final thoughts: I really like the color combination of Tom Ford's new natural quad, Disco Dust. I find the shades to be unique and very wearable. On the other hand the top row of the quad, especially the golden nude shade is inferior than Tom Ford quality so it is a mixed bag for me. Since I really love two out of four and can live with the third (glitter), I would still give it a thumbs up.
Availability: Now sure when these will hit the counters in Germany but I am guessing in a week or two. In UK and US, Disco Dust and Honeymoon are mostly sold out. These are permanent though, so don't worry if you miss them, they will be back in stock eventually.
